Four Days of Buffalo Bills Training Camp – Years of the Same Two Problems

The Buffalo Bills completed day four of training camp Tuesday night under the lights at St. John Fisher College. The players practiced on the turf on the main field and showcased their talents and well, their weaknesses. Some common themes emerged that have been there a lot longer than 8 hours.

Call it Groundhog Day for the Bills when it comes to these two topics: No franchise quarterback and a weak offensive line. Let’s start with the offensive line. Granted, as Vic Carrucci from the Buffalo News points out, it could be that the defense is just that good but on the other hand is it that the offensive line is that bad? Good question. I do think it is both. It has been that way for years. I won’t poke fun at Aaron Kromer who is now back with the Bills at least until the season starts, but I hope, despite his personal troubles he finds some way to do something that past coaches have not been able to do: Create an offensive line that isn’t so offensive to Bills fans.

Onto the other common theme: No franchise quarterback. I will remind everyone that yes, there have only been four practices for a total of about 8 hours however, the lack of a strong CONSISTENT quarterback is nothing new. I have read countless (trust me I read a lot of articles about the Bills) stories about the performances of EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor (less about Matt Simms). One day it is Cassel in the lead for the job, then it's Tyrod, sometimes it’s EJ. As I have said, there have only been four practices. There is only about four weeks until the season starts but there’s a big BLANK SPACE (thank you Taylor Swift) next to starting quarterback position on the roster. I think the decision has to be made sooner rather than later. There can’t be indecision when the season starts. Pick your man and be done with it. Mold him. Make the offensive work with him. For God sake make the offensive line protect him.

Despite some uncertainty, the excitement level remains high as it should be. You can feel it when you are at training camp and when you see all these hype videos. As Jim Kelly said in a recent interview, let’s get back to that excitement and get pumped up again. Things will be different this year. That much is certain.
