The Buffalo Bills began mandatory minicamp today in Orchard Park. The minicamp runs through Thursday and should provide fans with at least a glimpse of what could be this season. That being said, I don’t want to “jump the gun” by reading too much into this week because of many reasons most of which is that they are not in pads. When they are in pads they play harder and the expectations are higher.

To provide an adequate overview of what transpired on the first day, I have compiled a list of tweets with the most “interesting” information from two Buffalo Bills reporters, WGR550’s Sal Capaccio and Mike Rodak, ESPN (I chose them because they provided the most tweets and thus the most information. It doesn’t mean I am choosing favorites). They are in order from first tweet to last pertaining to minicamp.

“Notable 1st O Bills Glenn, Incognito, Wood, Miller, Kouandjio, Cassel.”

Percy Harvin is here and working with offense. No sign of Seantrel Henderson.”

“Leodis McKelvin is getting plenty of work fielding/returning punts. Good sign for him.”

“Heavy run-game work for the Bills in the first portion of offensive team work today. Lots of toss-sweep action.”

“Plenty of different ways Bills are blocking toss-sweep. Tackles pulling a lot. FB leading sometimes. Even QB reversing then lead way.”

“Cassel hits Goodwin down sideline for TD against Ross Cockrell.”

“RBs involved in passing game on screens and swings a little more today”

“Chris Hogan is such a good route runner. Very precise.”

“Jimmy Gaines got beat badly by MarQueis Gray on out and up. Cassel found him for TD. Donnie Henderson was not happy.”

“Twice in a row Tyrod Taylor has worked the middle of the field in 7/7 red zone work for a nice touchdown pass.”

Nick O'Leary just made a nice one-handed grab heading to sideline. As usual, the TEs get a lot of rotation”

“Tyrod Taylor is having a good day. Ross Cockrell is not”

“EJ threads ball between 2 DB down sideline on almost all-out blitz to Easley for TD. Next play short to Hogan who makes catch off tip for TD”

“Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor splitting 1st team reps in 11 on 11s today. EJ Manuel and Matt Simms with 2nd/3rd group.”

“Still no Gilmore or McKelvin in team drills. Cockrell and Brooks still in their place.”

“Still no Sammy Watkins in team drills today.”

“Matt Simms slow, slow, slow to get the ball out in 7-on-7s. Broken up by Tarpley, Cockrell and Gaines on his only 3 reps.”

“Strong showing from Tyrod Taylor with 1st team so far today: 11-on-11: 2-4 7-on-7: 4-4 Red zone 7-on-7: 3-3, 2 TDs”

“Few bad overthrows from Matt Cassel today, but otherwise pretty good: 11-on-11: 4-7, 1 TD 7-7: 3-5, 1 TD Red zone 7-7: 1-2, 1 TD”

“Sammy Watkins taking reps in 11 on 11s for the first time we've seen. Catching screen from Taylor.”

Tyrod Taylor finishes 12 for 14. Cassel goes 10-for-17. Split first team reps today.”

“Asked about season ticket record, Rex Ryan says, "Come on in here and get a piece of this." Says expectations should be high.”

“Rex Ryan says there is a "level of excitement" at quarterback because fans, coaches know "someone will have to earn the job."”

“Andre Reed on Sammy Watkins: "His upside is so upside it's upside."

My “takeaways” based on these tweets:

  • The quarterback competition reigns supreme.

  • Andre Reed being on the field just adds a new electricity (yes I am female but I’m sure males would agree).

  • Don’t miss a second of Rex Ryan. This man is a walking soundbite. As a former journalist I can tell you he makes their jobs a lot easier. Just keep recording, there is a gem in every breath.
