It has been no secret that the Buffalo Bills second round pick, Cyrus Kouandjio, has struggled mightily at right tackle this preseason. Luckily the Bills selected another offensive tackle in the seventh round, Seantrel Henderson, and he filled in admirably at left tackle in Cordy Glenn's absence through the first half of preseason. Since Glenn’s return this week from his mysterious medical issue, Henderson has been taking snaps as the first team right tackle.
So the question must be asked, why haven't the Bills tried Cyrus Kouandjio at guard yet?
It would be perfectly understandable trying to develop Kouandjio as a tackle if there was a desperate need there, but Henderson has been an absolute steal. It looks like he's going to be the Bills starting right tackle opposite Cordy Glenn for a long time. Head Coach Doug Marrone even believes that the tandem of Cordy Glenn and Seantrel Henderson could be “special.”
Kouandijo’s play has been bad enough that some fans have pondered cutting the rookie tackle. The reality is the Bills brass isn’t going to give up on their 2nd round pick halfway through his first preseason, nor should they, but he won’t be seeing the field at tackle anytime soon. It wouldn’t be the first time a highly touted tackle has had to settle into guard and the Bills need help on the interior of their offensive line. Free agent signee Chris Williams has disappointed at left guard to this point & there has been a carousal at right guard dating back to late last season.
Again, why haven’t the Bills started developing Kouandijo at guard? It’s a fair question and much more rational than releasing the rookie tackle.
